  Make sure you have an air brake on the highway recommendation

  In order to obtain an on-highway air brake endorsement on an individual unit within B.C., you must:

  • Take an approved ICBC air brake class on a single unit vehicle, or possess sufficient knowledge of air brakes (contact us to find out if your previous experience is eligible)
  • You must pass the air brake test.
  • Complete an air brake preliminary trip test on a single-unit car fitted with air brakes
  • You must pay your fee for the road test and your license

  Road tests are not necessary.

  In order to obtain an air brake endorsement on a combination unit vehicle that is located in B.C., you must:

  • You must pass the Class 1 knowledge test. This also includes content on air brakes
  • Complete the B.C. Class 1 MELT training course that includes all the required air brakes instruction.
  • Take an air brake pre-trip test to pass the class 1 road test with a combination unit vehicle with air brakes
  • You must pay your fee for the road test and your license

  4. Visit a driving license office for your permit to be examined.
  5. If accepted, plan and submit the ICBC air brake test prior to the trip to determine the kind of endorsement for off-highway air brakes you're seeking (e.g. Single-unit automobile or a combination car, fitted by air brakes).

  Are training courses required?

  Training must be completed through your company that you are hiring. You do not have to take an air brake class at an instructor training center in order to get an off-highway brake approval.
